As an immigrant myself, I understand both the challenges and rewards of building a new life in a different country. Originally from West Africa, I have had the opportunity to live in several countries around the world and build meaningful connections before making Canada my home. Each place has uniquely shaped my perspective.
Canada has given me something special and meaningful: a sense of peace, stability and belonging.
Through my journey, I have learned that arrival is only the beginning of a much larger experience in the life of an immigrant — one filled with hope, aspiration, challenges, growth and a sense of belonging.
In the warmer months, communities across Kawartha Lakes come alive with gatherings, celebrations, and opportunities to connect. For many newcomers, immigrants, and refugees, these moments represent growth, renewal, and the ongoing journey toward belonging.
One of the things I appreciate most is the strong sense of community here. Whether enjoying beautiful lakes and natural landscapes, exploring hiking and cycling trails, or attending local events at this time of year, people find ways to support one another, participate, and foster inclusion. These shared experiences help transform our region into a place where people feel welcomed and connected.
Throughout the year, we are reminded of the importance of celebrating our diversities, multicultural life, inclusion, and respect for all people. Building communities where everyone feels valued and free to be themselves strengthens our collective sense of belonging. Inclusion creates opportunities for people from all backgrounds and experiences to contribute, connect, and thrive.
We are also reminded of the courage and resilience of refugees and others who have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict, persecution, or disaster. Many arrive carrying stories of hardship, but they also bring hope, determination, and a desire to build a better future. Their experiences remind us of our shared humanity and the importance of extending compassion and welcome to those seeking safety and opportunity.
Diversity continues to enrich our schools, workplaces, businesses, and community life. The many cultures, traditions, and perspectives that people bring help create stronger, more vibrant communities for everyone. By continuing to embrace inclusion and community connections we can help build a place where everyone feels welcome, valued, and empowered to contribute and grow.
